David Maclay

David, a Chartered Accountant is the Managing Director having co-founded the firm in 1990. David runs the insolvency practice within the firm and specialises in Member Voluntary Liquidations. Before coming to BJM David had been a partner in a national accountancy practice since 1980. He is involved in audit, accountancy and insolvency work within the practice. He has specialised in giving advice to medical practices on the implications of the new GMS Contract. This involved presenting seminars before the contract has been accepted by the medical profession. He continues to present seminars in many locations on specific areas of the new contract that are of topical interest to the medical profession and in particular to our clients.

 

Robert McKerral

Robert is the Audit Compliance Director and ICAS Training Principal. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and a period as a manager with a Big Four firm, Robert joined Spicer and Openheimer (BJM’s predecessor) in 1985, and became a Partner in BJM in 1993. Robert specialises in providing audit assurance, accounting and business advisory services across a wide range of industries and professions, including charities and clients in the healthcare sector. He also advises on company acquisitions and disposals. 

 

 Martin McBeth

Martin qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1988, after graduating in accountancy from Glasgow University in 1984. After spending two years with an international practice in Melbourne, Australia, he joined Bannerman Johnstone Maclay in 1991 and became a partner in 1998. Martin acts for clients in a wide range of sectors including property, retail, healthcare, and contracting.

 

Stephen Lawson

Stephen is the Tax Department Director. He also runs our Financial Services Company which provides investment, pensions and protection advice.Stephen is a Chartered Accountant and Member of the Chartered Institute of Tax. He joined the firm in 1999 from a national accountancy practice. In this role, he brings his wide experience of taxation issues to bear. He specialises in onshore and offshore tax planning in relation to all taxes, business and personal taxes, tax investigations at all levels, onshore and offshore trusts, capital taxes including inheritance tax and personal tax planning for High Net Worth individuals. 

 

Douglas Paton

Douglas specialises in audit and became a Director in 2007. Douglas graduated with a BSc in Mathematics, Statistics and Finance in 1996 and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting the following year, both at the University of Strathclyde. He joined BJM in 1997 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2000. In addition to audit Douglas also provides advisory services to many of our clients including providing reviews of accounting and control systems and financial forecasting assistance. Some of our clients have foreign subsidiaries and Douglas' work has taken him as far afield as Houston (Texas), Gothenburg and France.
